In order to give you more specific information about level 1 foods, we at Betr health are highlighting one food each week! This week we've chosen Blueberries because they pack a whole bunch of nutritional benefits! Check it out!

1. High in Antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that fight harmful free radicals and provide health benefits . Antioxidants prevent cell damage, and protect against certain types of chronic disease, including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. 

Blueberries are not only one of the best sources of antioxidants, but also
 contain more of many specific types of antioxidants, including phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins.

2. Help with Weight Loss - 

Blueberries are a nutrient-dense food. They have approximately 40 calories per 1/2 cup, and pack a good amount of vitamins and minerals. Blueberries are especially high in fiber, vitamin K, manganese and vitamin C. Furthermore, blueberries have approximately 3.6 grams of fiber per cup, fulfilling a big part of daily fiber intake necessities. 

3 . Protect against certain Cancers -

Recent research shows that blueberries may protect against certain types of cancer.

For example, in  2007 a study showed that low-bush blueberry juice reduced the growth of several types of cancer, including stomach, prostate, intestine and breast cancer cells. 

No research is 100% conclusive but we at Betr definitely recommend incorporating some berries for this great possible health benefit. 

4. Reduce Inflammation -

Although inflammation is a normal immune response,  chronic inflammation can contribute to cancer, autoimmune conditions, heart disease and even depression. 

Thanks to its high antioxidant content, blueberries have been shown to have a significant anti-inflammatory effect in the body. 

5. Promote Heart, Brian and Gut Health 

  • Heart Health  - Studies show that eating blueberries could help reduce some of the risk factors for heart disease. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition reported that consuming blueberries led to a decrease in blood pressure and oxidized LDL cholesterol, two major risk factors for heart disease, compared to a control group. 
  • Brain Health -  Many studies suggest eating blueberries can improve memory and cognition. 
  • Gut health - With approximately 3.6 grams of fiber in each cup it is easy to see why blueberries can help with digestion and reducing constipation.
