Nutrition bars are known to be a good on-the-go snack when you don't have time to prepare one in advance. They are definitely a better option than hitting a drive-thru for some fries, but they aren't as beneficial as grabbing fruit instead.
- Hidden sugars. Some fruit bars have as high of sugar levels as a candy bar. Although it's advertised as having "natural flavors", many bars have artificial ones too. That's where the extra sugar comes in and we want to keep those out!
- Not considered a whole food. Bars are processed which removes a lot of the nutritional value and fiber you would consume in a regular fruit. Processed foods have less fiber to slow digestion, so the sugar is digested fast and causes a big spike in blood sugar. The result is a feeling of sluggishness throughout the day.
- "Energy boosting" ingredients. Bars that contain herbs or tea extracts with caffeine can negatively impact some people's heart rate or blood pressure. Eating fruit is a trustworthy source of gaining energy naturally.
Overall, fruits have vitamins and minerals that are easily absorbed and used by the body. The fruits chosen for the protocol are approved because they are best for fueling a healthy gut. They’re tasty, portable and and an amazing source of fiber. Remember, an apple a day keeps the doctor away! (and keeps Dr.Ferro happy too :))
