Glycemic Index & Fruits on Level 1

We often get asked why we have listed certain foods on our Level 1 food list, in particular fruits. The fruits that have been chosen to start the program are low on the glycemic index. What does that mean exactly?

Each type of food has its own glycemic index which is compared to pure sugar. Pure sugar has an index of 100. This means that pure sugar is rapidly broken down into glucose. This glucose is sent to the cells all over the human body for the production of energy, or it is saved in the muscles which can be used later when needed. If we are not using this energy it is stored as fat.

Foods that contain glucose, fructose, and sucrose which are all forms of carbohydrates are classified as high glycemic index foods, moderate glycemic index foods, or low glycemic index foods.

While on level 1 during our reset, we want to provide the body with foods that will nourish and detoxify. Apples, oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, and blueberries are all low on the glycemic index and will bring adequate sugars, carbohydrates, and fiber for your Level 1 week. A variety of fruits will be included on the menu later.
